Thiruvananthapuram: Swachh city' from April
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ambitious decentralised waste management is all set to get more thrust in the state capital with the city corporation gearing up to implement its Swachh Bharat initiative, which aims at strengthening and modernising the existing decentralised waste management initiative of the civic body. The project will take off from April onwards.
The main objective of the initiative is to make finished products from municipal waste including cost-effective organic fertilisers and recycled plastic products.
However, inadequate time for executing the projects will be a major challenge for the civic authorities as the fund will expire within a year.
A top official of the corporation said that the main challenge will be to complete the project within a limited time frame. “We will be able to launch the project only next financial year as we have to use plan fund for the purpose. Our aim is to prove that waste is not a menace. There are endless possibilities and we are planning for a plastic recycling unit to manufacture recycled plastic products. While another initiative will be to brand the manure being generated from our aerobic units, which will be distributed for free to promote organic farming,” said the official.
The around Rs 53 crore worth project will be implemented with financial aid from the state, centre and corporation’s plan fund. “In order to save time we have formed committees to do the spade works so that the initiative can be launched from April first week onwards,” said the official.
The civic authorities have launched an effort to find more sites for setting up aerobic units’ at all hundred wards in the state capital.
“Our decentralised waste management initiative will be completed only when all hundred wards have the facility,” said the official.
