Kottayam: The police took into custody ASI Biju of the Gandhinagar police station and Ajay, driver of the police vehicle, for interrogation in connection with the Kevin murder case.
There was some drama at the police station when Ajay tried to run away from police custody after he was informed that he was to appear at the Ettu-manur police station for questioning.
However, his colleagues overpowered him and took him to Ettumanur where he was questioned.
The two had allegedly abetted the criminal act of Kevin’s abductors. The police patrol under the ASI had intercepted their vehicle on the way, but they were allowed to go after the officials took bribes, it was stated.
IG Vijay Sakare, who is heading the investigation team, said that a criminal case will be charged against the accused if their guilt was established. “We will decide after the probe is over,” he said.
He refused to say whether a case will be charged against Mr M.S. Shibu, sub-inspector, who was suspended.
There are allegations that efforts were underway to save the SI from the case. Mr Sakare said that the SI had not taken prompt action after he was told about the kidnapping.
Among the 14 accused in the case, six are already under police custody. Three other accused, Pittu Jerome, Nishad and Fasal, were arrested on Wednesday.
