CHENNAI: In a bid to save water, the Chennai metro rail would opt for different technology for air-conditioning for upcoming corridors. “An average of 1,000 litres of water per day is used and once refrigeration technology is opted, we are looking to cut this down or treat sewage water and use it,” said L. Narasim Prasad, director, system and operation, CMRL at a press meet held here on Wednesday.
Talking about two underground stretches including Nehru Park to Central and Saidapet to AG-DMS, he said that there was a patronage of more than seven lakh since its inauguration and that the exit gate of Central near the Moor market would be opened next week.

“We are expecting good revenue and the food outlets outside the newly inaugurated metro stations have been doing fairly good. Also, the safety aspect is covered pretty well with over 50 cameras installed in each station and all areas mapped. We are able to track something even if it is happening at the remotest corners,” he said.
Also, outside Chennai Central and Saidapet, solar panels would be installed and these would also work as bus shelters. The work on the project would begin within 15 days at the Saidapet station. It is expected to generate 400 kilowatts of power. As far as other developments are concerned, the renovation of Nehru Park would be completed by next month and the intermodal hub work under Kathipara flyover has started and will get over by November. Till now, the average earning of CMRL from the fare box has been Rs 10 lakh per day and from parking Rs 1 lakh.
