Rare surgery performed in Kovai
Coimbatore: A 65-year-old male patient from Karur who experienced pain in the right shoulder and found it difficult to perform routine activities visited city-based Royal Care Super Speciality Hospital.
At the medical centre, Dr Dinesh Chidambaram, consultant orthopaedic and shoulder specialist put the patient through a detailed clinical examination. With the help of an MRI, the patient was diagnosed to have “massive retracted rotator cuff tear with severe atrophy.”
Tendon transfer and reverse shoulder arthroplasty procedure is performed for the specific condition. However, considering the age of the patient, Dr. Dinesh decided to go on with an advanced technique known as “superior capsular reconstruction,” the hospital said in a statement. In this, tissue from the thigh was used to repair the torn cuff in the shoulder. Besides requiring a shorter hospital stay, the patient underwent less pain.
