Probe panel on Thoothukudi police firing may summon Rajinikanth
Thoothukudi: The one-man commission headed by Justice Aruna Jegadeesan on Thoothukudi police firing may also summon superstar Rajnikanth if necessary, said the advocate to the commission, Arul Vadivel Shekar.
Responding to media persons here on Friday, after the fourteenth phase of the enquiry of the commission, Advocate Arul Vadivel Shekar said that 378 witnesses appeared before the commission till August 30.
Recorded their witness statements, the commission too collected 555 documents from the witnesses so far appeared before it,” said the commission advocate, who also added that the commission may complete its work and submit its final report by February next year as it has been given an extension for six more months by the Tamil Nadu state government.
Responding to the media on whether the commission would summon the Tamil matinee idol Rajnikanth, who made a statement that anti-social elements intruded into the people’s gathering in Thoothukudi and triggered violence that resulted in police firing, the commission advocate said, “if the one-man commission feels it necessary to summon him to give his witness, it will do so.”
Moreover, the commission has decided to summon the social activist, Muhilan, as a video document has been submitted to the commission on his behalf. “We too have plan to get the witness statements from the electronic and print media personnel, who were in the field during the incident on May 22, 2018,” added Advocate Arul Vadivel Shekar, who, however. said that the date for the next phase of the enquiry was not yet decided. He added that the commission has submitted its report based on the enquiry held so far to the Madras high court.
