KSRTC, SCT staff fight over land

Thiruvananthapuram: The dispute over a piece of land at the KSRTC central depot at Pappanamcode here between staff of KSRTC and Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, on Tuesday, turned murky with an open fight between the two groups.

Incidentally, the college was also under the KSRTC. As many as 33 people including students, KSRTC staff and cops were injured in the confrontation on Tuesday. Sources said the injuries were not serious. Karamana police registered a case on the issue.

Though KSRTC management had agreed to hand over 12.5 acres of land to the Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering for a playground, only 4.9 acres have been handed over to the college authorities till now.

Following the opposition from the staff the decision to hand over the remaining land was kept on the backburner.

On Monday, a group of students broke the fence which demarcated the boundary of the KSRTC central depot and the college and erected flags on top of the heap of tyres lying there.

On Tuesday, KSRTC staff began to erect a new fence at around 6 a.m.

By 8 am students of the college began to break the portions of the fence of erected by the KSRTC staff, resulting in stone throwing from both sides.

The tensions continued till noon. Following the intervention from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, it was decided to conduct a meeting between the two parties to settle the issue.
