Severed palm replaced successfully in Kozhikode
Kozhikode: A rare surgery held at a private hospital here has corrected the severed palm of a 22-year-old man.
Rauf of Nadamalpoyil lost his palm in an accident at a sawmill in Manipuram, the hospital said in a press release on Tuesday.
On October 5, he was there for buying wood. Suddenly a stampeding bull dashed at him.
While running for life, he accidentally ran into the working sawmill resulting in the severing of his palm.
People immediately rushed him along with severed palm to Aster MIMS Hospital.
The plastic surgery team led by Dr Krishna Kumar, senior consultant and head, plastic and reconstructive surgery department, sutured the severed palm in a 12-hour-long two-stage surgery. The first which took more than seven hours reattached his tiny blood vessels and bones. Three days later, doctors were able to reconstruct his nerves and muscles in five hours.
Mr Rauf left the hospital four days later, and his hand has regained 90 per cent of its functionality.
