Slain journo married last year, went to cover polls

SP says the media team was the target of the Maoists.

Bhopal: Doordarshan cameraman Achyutanand Sahu who along with two cops was slain by Maoists in Nilwaya jungle in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar district of Dantewada on Tuesday was married last year.

The Odisha-based scribe had gone to Dantewada along with the DD News team for coverage of coming assembly elections in Bastar, scheduled to be held in the first phase of polls in Chhattisgarh on November 12.

Mr Sahu who had married on February 12 last year had left for Bastar from Delhi along with the DD crew on October 28 for election coverage, a senior police officer posted in Bastar told this newspaper.

He had posted four pictures along with the famed Chitrokot waterfall, known as mini-Niagra in India, around 25 km from Jagdalpur, headquarters of Bastar, in his Facebook wall just two hours before he fell to Maoists’ bullets.

He had uploaded another picture showing him in the company of local tribal children.

“The media team was the target of the Maoists, who never wanted coverage in the media on the developmental works being carried out in the interior Dantewada” , Dantewada district superintendent of police Abhishek Pallav said.

“Two security personnel were martyred while saving the media team”, he said.

The DD crew and a police team giving them escort in the area were ambushed by Maoists when they reached forested village of Nilwaya at around ten in the morning, leading to killing of the scribe and an assistant sub-inspector and an assistant constable.
