All-party meet on BC quota
Hyderabad: Opposition parties and the BC Welfare Association on Sunday demanded that the government withdraw the ordinance issued regarding reservations in the Panchayat Raj polls and continue the 34 per cent reservations to BCs.
The government had reduced the reservations to 22 per cent to keep with the 50 per cent cap set by the High Court.
TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy condemned the statement of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao at a press conference on Saturday, and said the Congress had never approached the court to limit reservations to 50 per cent. “KCR is lying,” he said.
Speaking to mediapersons, Mr Reddy said, “Reservations should be implemented as per the BC census. The Congress has continued 34 per cent reservations to BCs. Why has the TRS government reduced it to 22 per cent? Though government has statistics of BCs, they are not approaching the court.”
He said the government had said that they will spend more than '25,000 crore for the welfare of BCs but has not even spent '10,000 crore. The BC sub-plan should be implemented. “Even a TRS leader has moved the court, demanding that BC reservations not to be increased over 50 per cent,” Mr Reddy said.
BC Welfare Association national president R. Krishnaiah said the state government had cut the BC reservation when there was a national movement going on to implement 56 per cent reservations for BCs. “Following the orders of the Supreme Court the government reduced reservations to 23 per cent. We protested and Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy and Mr Jana Reddy spoke to BC leaders and later continued 34 per cent reservations. Why is the issue raised now?”
