SI Ashraful Sheikh and five others, including his wife, were arrested for attacking doctors, nurses, and police at a Murshidabad hospital.

Berhampore: A rogue cop was arrested along with five others for allegedly beating doctors, nurses and cops at a government hospital in Murshidabad of West Bengal. The accused is sub inspector (SI) Ashraful Sheikh of the state police from Dewansarai village at Lalgola in the district.

He was shunted to the Birbhum district police headquarters and was subjected to a departmental inquiry after his removal as officer-in-charge (OC) of Kirnahar police station in November last year for illegally confining a youth in the police lockup and extorting one lakh rupees from him.

The action followed a complaint by the youth to chief minister Mamata Banerjee. On Tuesday night, Mr Sheikh admitted his ailing mother at Krishnapur Grameen Hospital in Lalgola. He however attacked some on-duty doctors and nursing staff, accusing them of negligence in his mother's treatment.

OC, Lalgola police station Atanu Das rushed to the hospital with his team and rescued the doctors and nurses. Mr Sheikh and his family members then turned their heat on the cops and beat them also.

Mr Sheikh, his wife and four others were arrested for assaulting the doctors, nurses and cops, Sub Divisional Police Officer (Bhagwangola) Uttam Gorai said. On Wednesday, the Lalbag ACJM Court remanded the cop and his wife in police custody and sent four others to jail custody.
