Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee dies

Kolkata: CPI(M) veteran and former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee breathed his last at his residence in south Kolkata on Thursday morning. He was 80 and is survived by his wife Meera and ward Suchetan.

Bhattacharjee became the CM of the state in 2000 after CPI(M) patriarch Jyoti Basu vacated the post. Later, Bhattacharjee held the post till 2011 when the CPI(M)-Left Front rule came to an end in the state.

According to his family members, Bhattacharjee fell ill after having breakfast at his Palm Avenue residence in Karaya. The end came at around 8.20 am. On Wednesday night, the condition of Bhattacharjee, who had COPD, suddenly worsened.

The situation was stabilised initially. It was decided that he would be admitted to Woodlands Hospital for treatment on Thursday morning. The ex-CM however fell ill post breakfast. He was given a nebulizer then and there but he apparently suffered cardiac arrest and passed away. The doctors rushed to his residence and declared him dead.

Bhattacharjee's successor Mamata Banerjee posted on X-handle, "Shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of the former Chief Minister Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. I have been knowing him for last several decades, and visited him a few times when he was ill and effectively confined to home in the last few years."

She added, "My very sincere condolences to Meeradi and Suchetan at this hour of grief. I communicate my condolences to the members of the CPI(M) party and all his followers. We have already taken a decision that we shall give him full respect and ceremonial honour during his last journey and rites."

Leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari posted on X-handle, “I am deeply saddened to learn that former West Bengal Chief Minister; Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has left for his heavenly abode. Condolences to his family members and admirers. I pray that his soul finds eternal peace. Om Shanti.”
