Manipur tribal body declares economic blockade across Kuki-Zo inhabited districts
The Council has urged all tribes, civil society groups, and organisations within Kuki-Zo communities to stand united in demanding justice and resisting what they described as "systemic oppression"
Guwahati: The Kuki-Zo Council, the apex body representing Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur, has started an economic blockade across all Kuki-Zo inhabited districts of the state from Thursday midnight until 2 am on January 4 to protest against what the council describes as the state government and Centre's alleged disregard for tribal rights and dignity.
The blockade has led to restrictions on vehicular movement and the transportation of essential commodities through these regions. In a statement, the Council urged all tribes, civil society groups, and organisations within the Kuki-Zo communities to unite in demanding justice and to resist what they termed "systemic oppression."
This move follows the Kuki-Zo Council's full support of the Committee on Tribal Unity’s (CoTU) call for a complete shutdown in Kangpokpi district and mass public protests at Kangpokpi District Headquarters on January 3, 2025. Among the key demands is the immediate withdrawal of Central forces stationed in Saibol, highlighting the escalating tensions between tribal communities and government authorities.
The Kuki-Zo Council emphasised that the blockade is a collective response against indifference and oppression, appealing to all affected communities to stand together in solidarity for justice. Recently established as the political platform for Kuki-Zo communities across all districts of Manipur, the council aims to address and resolve the ongoing grievances of the tribal population.
