Tension in Kyrgyzstan subsides slowly

Hyderabad: After hostile attacks on Indian students by locals, tensions are slowly subsiding in Kyrgyzstan. The attacks, which sparked outrage and concern internationally, was followed by strong diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of Indian students in Kyrgyzstan.

The violence erupted after local Kyrgyz broke into dormitories and hostels of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi students studying in various educational institutions and attacked them brutally. The disputes escalated into major rampage groups, and resulted in injuries and a state of fear among students.

In response, the Kyrgyz government, along with university authorities, implemented strict security measures around the campuses and hostel areas, and local police have increased patrolling in areas with high concentrations of foreign students. Officials were also stationed at hostel and dormitory premises at all times.

Students in Kyrgyzstan said the tensions have subsided significantly, and they are moving in and out of their hostels. But they are still very cautious about being attacked, and are on high-alert for any onslaught.

Telangana chief minister A. Revanth Reddy inquired the Kyrgyz officials about the welfare of students in Kyrgyzstan. The officials explained that all Indian students are safe. They also confirmed that no Indian student was seriously injured or hospitalised in the incident, and many social media posts stating otherwise were found to be untrue.
