Three naval warships commissioned in Mumbai; PM Modi attends event

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the commissioning of three frontline Indian Navy vessels—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The Navy described the event as a historic milestone in India's maritime and defence capabilities. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the induction of these combatants reflects India’s progress toward self-reliance and strengthens its global defence leadership.

INS Nilgiri, the first ship in the Project 17A stealth frigate class, is a testament to India’s advanced naval engineering. Designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), it features enhanced survivability, advanced stealth technology, and reduced radar signatures.

With modern aviation capabilities, it can accommodate multiple helicopters, including the recently inducted MH-60R. Nilgiri’s design builds upon the Shivalik-class frigates, showcasing improved seakeeping and combat readiness.

INS Surat, the final vessel in the Project 15B stealth destroyer class, follows the Kolkata-class destroyers with improved design and operational capabilities. Developed by the Warship Design Bureau and constructed at MDL, Surat is a critical asset to India’s surface fleet, equipped to meet evolving naval challenges.

INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and last submarine under the Scorpene-class Project 75, is a diesel-electric submarine built for versatile roles, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence gathering.

Notable for its modular construction, Vaghsheer is prepared for future upgrades like air-independent propulsion technology, ensuring its operational relevance for years to come.

All three platforms have been designed and constructed entirely in India, underscoring the country’s growing expertise in indigenous shipbuilding and defence production. The vessels underwent rigorous trials and are now fully operational.

The commissioning of the three frontline naval combatants will strengthen the country's efforts towards being a global leader in defence and augment its strength towards self-reliance, PM Modi said in a post on X on Tuesday.
