MP: Dalit couple beaten, made to wear garlands of shoes, 10 persons booked

The couple's son had allegedly been involved in an eve-teasing incident, they said

Bhopal: A Dalit couple in a Madhya Pradesh village were tied to a pole, then beaten and later made to wear garlands of shoes over alleged eve-teasing of a married woman by their son, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Kilora village under Mungaoli police station in Ashok Nagar district on Friday.

According to the police, some people in the village had subjected a 65-year-old man and his wife (60) to physical torture and humiliation to avenge the alleged eve-teasing of a married woman by their son.

The elderly couple were tied to a pole in the village, then beaten and later made to wear garlands of shoes by the accused, police said.

The victim woman lodged a complaint in the local police station on Saturday.

Based on her complaint, police booked ten people in connection with the incident.

The couple’s son was allegedly involved in eve-teasing the wife of one of the accused following which the Dalit family left the village, Mungaoli police station in-charge Gabbar Singh Gurjar said.

The Dalit couple had come to the village recently.

They were booked under sections of 147 (riots), 149 (unlawful assembly with common objective), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (obscene act), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, police said.

The accused were absconding, police said.
