‘Dark period of emergency’ will be part of school curriculum in MP, says Mohan Yadav

Bhopal: A chapter detailing the excesses done during the emergency in the country will be included in the school curriculum in Madhya Pradesh.

This was announced by Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav while addressing the conference of the state unit of MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act) prisoners association here.

Mr Yadav said that a chapter narrating the ‘dark period of emergency’ would be included in the studies in the schools with an objective to make the present generation aware of the excesses done during the period.

“The present generation must know about the excesses such as imprisonment of Opposition leaders, media persons and even the common people, done during the emergency in the country. Hence, a subject titled ‘dark period of emergency’ will be part of studies in the school”, he said.

He said that it was imperative to make the present generation aware of the ‘dark period of emergency’ to ensure that any move to re-impose emergency in the country in future would be fought tooth and nail by them.

Mr Yadav described those, who were persecuted and dumped in the jails for opposing the emergency then, as ‘soldiers of democracy’ and said that the democracy and the Constitution of India survived today because of the sacrifices made by them while fighting against the emergency.

The MISA prisoners had set an example by making their fight against the emergency as a people's movement.

Mr Yadav paid floral tribute to Jai Prakash Narayan, who had become a rallying point of opposition against emergency then, on the occasion.

The chief minister announced a series of doles for the MISA prisoners on the occasion.

He declared that the last rites of a deceased MISA prisoner would be done with state honour.

He also announced to hike the expenses borne by the state government for the last rites of the MISA prisoners from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000.

Mr Yadav said that the MISA prisoners would be entitled to avail accommodation for three days in the government rest houses and circuit houses with a room tariff discounted by 50 percent.
