Odisha: Debt-Ridden Law Professor Kills Father Over Loan Repayment Dispute

Bhubaneswar: A debt-ridden law university teacher allegedly stabbed his father to death after the latter denied complying with demand for money to repay the loan.

The deceased was identified as Sunil Choudhury, a retired official of the Navratna public sector unit – National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) official. He was staying in an apartment at Rangamatia under Mancheswar police limits here in the city.

On being informed by the neighbours, the police immediately reached the place and took the accused Anirudha Choudhury into custody.

“The accused, as preliminary investigation reveals, was under stress because of his debt-burden. He had a verbal duel with his father who refused to give him money to repay the loan. A detailed investigation into the incident has been launched, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Prateek Singh said.

As per reports, the accused has been working as a professor at a law university. He was staying with his father at the Rangamatia apartment.

Residents in the area were in utter dismay over the incident and express their disbelief that how can an educated professional kill his elderly father in such a cruel manner.

“Anirudha and his wife had a squabble a couple of days ago and she had gone to her home. Sunil had been staying with his father for the last two days. I don’t know anything about what prompted Anirudha to kill his father,” said a friend of the deceased who brought the deceased to the hospital in a serious condition.

“We just reached the spot and started the investigation. The accused has been detained and his questioning is currently underway. More information about the incident could be divulged after the investigation,” said Bhubaneswar ACP Goutam Kisan.

“I just came to know about the incident at around 6 am today. I can’t say much about the incident,” said a local resident.

“I came to know about the murder at 8 am. They are a good family. I have never heard any squabble in the family. I don’t know much about their internal affairs. It is an unfortunate incident,” said another resident in the area.
