Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday predicted the end of the BJP rule at the Centre by 2029. She also accused the BJP of tampering with the electoral rolls by adding fake voters and slammed the Narendra Modi government’s silence on the deportation of illegal Indian immigrants in chains from the US.
The Trinamul Congress supremo told her party workers at a meeting in the city, “The BJP will lose power between 2027 and 2029. They will do whatever is possible for them in the next three to four years maximum. They do not have a longevity of more than two to three years.”
Attacking the Centre, Ms Banerjee observed, “The BJP often talks about infiltration but switches into meeting mode when our fellow citizens are deported by another country in chains for being illegal immigrants. Did they discharge their responsibility? If Columbia can do it, why isn't the Indian government talking about sending planes to bring our citizens back home with honour and provide them jobs here? It is a matter of shame for the country.”
Referring to the state Assembly elections due next year, Ms Banerjee sounded confident that the TMC will bag more than what it won in 2021. “We will win over 215 seats in 2026 and further diminish the BJP's tally,” she said amid a thunderous applause.
During her address, the TMC chief made some startling claims. She accused the BJP of opening a tech firm, Association of Billion Minds, to create a list of fake voters.
According to Ms Banerjee, the modus operandi is to collect the identity data of the voters from the state and use it fraudulently in the names of voters mostly from Haryana and Gujarat so that the voters from other states can come and cast their ballots for the BJP for its electoral victory like it happened in Delhi and Maharashtra.
Vowing to foil a repeat in Bengal, Ms Banerjee ordered the TMC leaders to “clean” the voters lists in their areas first and take it up with the Election Commission.
Ms Banerjee also questioned the recent appointment of retired IAS officer Gyanesh Kumar as Chief Election Commissioner in the context of his last stint as secretary in the Union coordination ministry headed by Amit Shah. “I used to respect the Election Commission. But now, it appears filled with BJP-aligned individuals.”
The TMC chief, however, directed her party workers not to speak against I-PAC, the political consulting firm hired by the ruling party and to cooperate with its workforce ahead of the polls. She clarified that Prashant Kishore, who opened the company, left it and launched his political outfit.
Reacting to the TMC chief’s meeting, Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar alleged, “Ms Banerjee makes such a drama before each and every election. Some journalists called it a strategy meeting of the TMC! But this can't happen like this in front of 15,000 party workers.”
Mr Majumdar added: “Ms Banerjee decides her strategy at meetings with the district magistrates and superintendents of police. The DMs and SPs engineer the polls at the behest of the TMC and not the party workers."
