Economic survey projects Maharashtra’s economy to grow by 7.6%

Mumbai: Maharashtra continues to maintain its top position among the states for attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India, the State Economic Survey 2023-24 has said. The state’s economy is expected to grow by 7.6 per cent, but its per capita income has slipped to a sixth rank in the country.

As per the survey, the FDI equity inflow in Maharashtra was Rs 1,25,101 crore as compared to Rs 1,18,422 crore in 2022-23. The total number of MSMEs registered on the Udyam registration portal up to January 9, 2024, was 33.07 lakh (32.05 lakh micro, 0.91 lakh small and 0.11 lakh medium) with 123.39 lakh total employment.

The Economic Survey was presented by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also handles the finance portfolio, in the monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature on Thursday.

In 2022-23, Maharashtra registered a growth of 6.8 per cent, which is expected to grow by 7.6 per cent in 2023-24.

In this financial year, the service sector has the largest share (63.8 percent) in the economic development of the state, followed by industry (25 percent). Agriculture and allied activities are expected to grow by 11.2 percent. During the last decade, the service sector has an average share of 57.1 percent in the development of the state, followed by industry (30.9 percent). Whereas, agriculture and other allied sectors have a share of 12 percent.

Maharashtra’s income for 2023-24 is Rs 40.44 lakh crore, which is expected to increase by 10.9 percent compared to the financial year 2022-23, while the domestic income is Rs 293.90 lakh crore and it is expected to increase by 9.1 percent compared to 2022-23.

The per capita income of the state is expected to be Rs 2,77,603 in 2023-24 and Rs 2,52,389 in 2022-23. In terms of per capita income in 2022-23, Maharashtra is ranked sixth, preceded by Telangana, Karnataka, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
