CBSE to Refund Class 12 Students Overcharged Due to Technical Glitch

The CBSE said that in all cases of excess payment, the "exact excess amounts shall be refunded to the same payment method which was used for payment"

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday said it will refund students who were overcharged during the Class 12 post-result process following technical issues.

The announcement came a day after Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan sought a detailed report from the board over complaints of glitches during the re-evaluation process.
In a notice, the CBSE said technical issues on May 21 and 22 led to incorrect fee deductions when students applied for scanned copies of evaluated answer scripts. “In some instances, excess payment was deducted, while in others, lesser amounts were charged,” it said.
The board said excess amounts would be refunded to the original payment method. “Similarly, in cases where lesser payment was deducted, candidates shall be informed separately regarding payment of the balance amount, if required,” it said.
“Scanned copies of the evaluated answer books shall be provided in all such cases, without candidates being required to submit fresh requests,” it added.
Sources said the minister had taken serious note of server downtime, payment gateway issues and operational lapses reported during the process.
The CBSE had earlier said it was monitoring the situation and taking corrective steps, including extending timelines and making technical interventions.
In a statement, the board said: “Parents and students are requested not to feel anxious if they have encountered such issues. The very purpose of the verification and re-evaluation mechanism is to address genuine concerns in a structured and fair manner.”
It added that exceptionally high traffic on the portal had caused disruptions during peak periods.

The CBSE will engage experts from IIT-Madras and IIT-Kanpur to address technical issues in its post-result services portal.

The move follows directions from Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan to depute teams of professors and technical experts to examine glitches reported since the rollout of this year’s re-evaluation services.

“The expert team will implement focused technological improvements of the systems and technical workflows and will specifically examine portal stability and server performance,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The team will also examine the overall IT Infrastructure robustness and assist in taking corrective measures to ensure that login authentication/ user access systems/ payment gateways are accurate and in order,” it added.

Mr Pradhan reiterated that “student interests remain paramount” and directed the CBSE to take corrective steps on priority to ensure a “transparent, efficient and student-friendly system”.

Meanwhile, the board has extended the deadline for applying for scanned copies of evaluated answer scripts.

“In continuation of the circular dated 22.05.2026, and to provide adequate time to students for submitting requests to obtained scanned copies of their evaluated answer books, the last date has further been extended to 25.05.2026 (mid night),” the CBSE said.
