Mangaluru: Former Mangaluru mayor K Ashraf has condemned the alleged removal of janivara (sacred thread) worn by some students at an examination center during the recent Common Entrance Test (CET) in Bengaluru, terming the reported action by exam staff as unacceptable.
In a statement, Ashraf, who is also the president of Dakshina Kannada District Muslim Okkuta said students appearing for examinations have the right not only to take the test but also to practise and uphold their religious beliefs. “Religious freedom is a fundamental right of every citizen and should not be violated under any circumstances,” he said.
He further stated that maintaining one’s religious identity and dignity is a matter of individual rights, and any attempt to interfere with it at examination centres is unacceptable. He urged authorities to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and that students are allowed to appear for exams without facing issues related to their religious practices.
