Family Allegedly Ostracised, Confined In House In Puri Village; Case Registered

“I visited the village and saw a stone wall in front of his house. As it was night, only a portion of the wall could be removed”: Gadisagada Police Station inspector Shantanu Pradhan

BHUBANESWAR: In a shocking incident from Odisha, a man and his family were allegedly socially ostracised and confined inside their house by villagers in Alipada village under Kanas block of Puri district.

According to reports, a woman from the village had accused the man of maintaining an illicit relationship. Following the allegation, a village committee summoned him to attend a meeting and present his side. However, he reportedly did not appear before the gathering.

Enraged over his absence, the village committee allegedly imposed a social boycott on him. Villagers are said to have constructed a stone wall in front of his house, blocking access. The premises were also reportedly sealed with barbed wire and nets, restricting movement in and out of the house.

As a result, the family members, including women and children, allegedly faced severe hardship and were reportedly left without food.

A complaint has been lodged at the local police station. Police officials said a case has been registered against more than 10 persons from the village, and an investigation is underway.

“I visited the village and saw a stone wall in front of his house. As it was night, only a portion of the wall could be removed. We discussed the matter with the villagers in the morning, and the stone wall was completely removed,” said Gadisagada Police Station inspector Shantanu Pradhan.
