Frogs Married in Varanasi to Appease Rain Gods

Varanasi: Amid a sweltering heatwave in North India, a male and female frog were married to appease the Rain Gods to get respite from the terrible heat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

A viral clip of this frog wedding surfaced on the internet. In the clip, two frogs are wrapped in a traditional red cloth. A local priest can be seen reciting mantras while other people are seated in front of them. As the video continues, a few ladies are heard singing traditional songs during the wedding ceremony, and people performing rituals on the frogs.

The tradition of marrying frogs is deeply rooted in folklore and ancient farming practices. It is especially prevalent in the areas where agriculture mostly relies on the monsoon season. The frog marriage is believed to be a symbolic ritual of Gods for the rainfall. This custom is widely practiced throughout India, with many regional variations and tales that justify its continuation.
