Heatwave in North India: Here's Some Precautionary Measures to Stay Protected

Hyderabad: India has seen 61 confirmed deaths till 31st May due to the heat wave in various parts of North India. The data from the Ministry of Health shows that almost 7 lakh people have been admitted to hospitals due to the severe heat wave in north India.

  • According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), “Heatwave conditions over Northwest, Central & East India are likely to continue with reduced intensity during the next 3 days.”

    “Heat wave conditions very likely in some parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi during 02nd-04th June and in isolated pockets of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad during 02nd-04th June; Himachal 3 Pradesh on 02nd & 03rd; Uttar Pradesh during 02nd-05th; Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh on 02nd & 03rd; Vidarbha on 02nd; Odisha during 02nd-04th; Jharkhand during 04th-06th; Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on 05th June, 2024,” read the IMD release.

    Precautions


    To make sure that one stays safe from the heat wave symptoms, it is necessary to take some precautions. Here are the precautionary measures to be followed:

    -Drink a lot of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty all the time. Check your hydration by monitoring your urine color to indicate the water intake. Pale yellow or transparent urine is ideal, while amber or dark yellow means lower hydration.

    -Check the online weather predictions or any heat wave alerts issued before stepping out of your home.
    -Try to wear light or loose-fitted clothes. Also, take cold showers to keep the skin wet.

    -Dip your hands and feet in cold water as the hands and feet have many pulse points or places where the blood vessels are close to the skin and a person can cool down faster.

    -Try to stay indoors during the heat and refrain from exercising. If you want to exercise, do it indoors and keep on sipping the water in between to stay hydrated. Stay Indoors most of the time and if you have to go out necessarily outside, postpone the events when the temperature is comparatively lower than other parts of the day.
    -Don’t stay in the car for a longer time as its temperature can increase up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit when it is left in the sun, in just 10 minutes.
