Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district continued to experience heavy rain on Friday, with 255 people from 128 families in low-lying areas now residing in relief centers where they are receiving essential amenities.
In Udupi district, a woman died due to mudslide on Thursday.
As a precaution, the Uttara Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for schools and PU colleges on July 6 in all five coastal taluks: Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, and Bhatkal.
On Friday, heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the Kadra Dam on the Kali River led to the opening of four gates, releasing 6,000 cusecs of water, as the water level reached the maximum limit of 30 meters.
Deputy Commissioner Gangubai Manakar said that two NDRF teams from Bengaluru have arrived and are stationed at Cyclone Center in Manki, ready for emergency operations.
Residents from various villages in Honnavar and Kumta taluks, which have been heavily affected by the rains, have been relocated to safer areas and housed in nearby relief centers.
A total of seven relief centers—six in Honnavar and one in Kumta—have been established, with instructions given to tahsildars in the affected taluks to open more centers if necessary.
Fisheries Minister and Uttara Kannada district in-charge Mankal S. Vaidya visited the relief camps in Honnavar Taluk on Friday. He instructed officials to ensure that all necessary facilities are provided to the people in these centers.
In the past 24 hours, one house in the district has been severely damaged and three houses partially damaged. Officials have been instructed to take all necessary precautions to prevent loss of human and livestock life due to the ongoing rains.
In Udupi district, Amba (45) from Kollur village in Byndoor, died due to a mudslide behind her house on July 4. Eight houses and four cattle sheds have been partially damaged in the district. As a precautionary measure holiday has been declared for schools and PU Colleges in Kundapura and Brahmavar Taluks of Udupi district on July 6.
Rainfall was comparatively lighter in the Dakshina Kannada district, where three houses and 54 electric poles were partially damaged.
