I&B Ministry Weighs Stricter Laws for Digital Content Regulation
Government Reviews Legal Framework Amid Concerns Over ‘Harmful’ Online Content

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry is examining existing laws and considering a new legal framework to regulate ‘harmful’ content on digital platforms. The move comes amid public outcry over ‘crass’ remarks made by podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia and other content creators on a YouTube show.
In a response to the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, the ministry acknowledged concerns over the misuse of freedom of expression to promote obscene and violent content online.
“While certain provisions exist under current laws, there is a growing demand for a stricter and more effective legal framework. We are in the process of examining the statutory provisions and the need for new regulations,” the ministry stated.
The issue was raised during a parliamentary panel meeting on February 13, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. The committee sought clarification on possible amendments to curb controversial content in light of evolving media and technology. The ministry assured the panel that a detailed note would be submitted after due deliberations.
