KOCHI: In major changes to the pattern of Class X exams, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has virtually reintroduced the old regime of setting aside 80 marks for Board exam while giving only 20 marks from internal assessment. From the next academic year, there will only be CBSE board exam in Class X. Currently, the ratio of board to internal marks is 60:40. In another major change, Board will conduct Class X examination for 80 marks in each subject covering 100 per cent syllabus of the subjects of Class X only.
At present, the final exam covers only half the portion of Class X. In another departure from the current practice, marks and grades will be awarded for individual subjects, according to the CBSE notification signed and issued by chairman R.K. Chaturvedi on Tuesday. Only grades are awarded for students in Class X right now. A student has to secure 33 per cent marks out of 80 (Board) and 20 marks (internal) in each subject to pass.
Out of the 20 marks in internal assessment, 10 marks go for periodic test, five marks each for notebook submission and subject enrichment activity. The CBSE has given detailed instruction in this regard in the notification on Tuesday. The CBSE has also introduced an element of discipline and the class teacher will be responsible for grading the students on a five-point scale from A to E. The CBSE has also instructed that the affiliated schools for the purpose of uniformity may replicate the same assessment model in Classes VI to IX also.
