Sigh of relief as water level in Godavari recedes
VIJAYAWADA: The water level in Godavari River started receding on Monday, with a discharge of 13.69 lakh cusecs downstream into the sea from Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at 10 pm.
The people as also officials engaged in flood-relief efforts in the erstwhile twin districts of Godavari heaved a sigh of relief.
In BR Ambedkar Konaseema district, nearly 3,046 families from 30 villages in 10 mandals had been affected by the Godavari floods and they were accommodated in 32 relief camps.
As many as 10,140 affected persons were evacuated to either relief camps or to safe places by boats.
Crop damages were estimated to be near ₹2.19 lakh crore as they were affected in a 1,141 hectares area in the district.
In the Eluru district, several villages mainly in Kukkunuru and Velerupadu mandals were affected and 435 families at Rudramakota village were hit. However, 286 families remained in the village while 99 families moved to the hilltop areas and 50 families moved to the houses of their kin.
Similarly, at Velerupadu mandal, nearly 34 habitations were affected as road connectivity was lost.
The authorities ensured the supply of essential commodities and vegetables to the marooned people, set up relief camps and organised health camps.
