59 drunken drivers sent to jail
Visakhapatnam: As part of the efforts to curb drunk driving in the city, the Visakhapatnam magistrate sent 59 offenders to two weeks’ jail. They have also been ordered to do community service at Bheemili Government Degree College for one hour daily during the prison term.
On Thursday, the police booked cases against 114 individuals who engaged in drunk-driving. They were produced before the magistrate. The offenders were caught across multiple police stations including Anandapuram, Bhimili, One Town, Newport, and Gajuwaka. The fines ranged from '1000 to '13,000 to each.
City police commissioner, Trivikram Varma, said, “Driving under the influence of alcohol not only imperils the lives of those operating vehicles but also jeopardizes the safety of innocent road users. Motorists are strongly advised to stay vigilant, prioritize safety, and refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol.”
