75-year-old tree saved from the axe in Kovai
COIMBATORE: Thanks to the team work of volunteers of a city-based NGO ‘Osai’, the city police and officials from the Forest department, a 75-year old White Spotted Fig tree (ficus virens aiton) escaped the axe.
The tree that stood in Kuniyamuthur was relocated to Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy campus that is located in Race Course. K Syed, better known as ‘Osai Syed’ overlooked the entire operation that involved pruning the branches, uprooting the tree, transporting it and re-planting the tree in the new location.
As soon as Syed got a call to help, he was quick to respond. “The native tree has a life span of 1,000 years. Besides providing humans with shade, it doubles up as in important resting and nesting place for a variety of bird species. A rich source of oxygen, we are happy that the tree has a new home and is preserved for our future generation” Syed said.
