Pensioners in Prakasam district get fake notes
Tirupathi: Presence of counterfeit currency in social security pensions provided to beneficiaries in Prakasam district has caused quite a stir on Sunday, prompting officials to order an inquiry into the matter.
The fake currency got noticed first at Narasayapalem in Yerragondapalem mandal when a beneficiary of Scheduled Caste Colony went to a shop with the pension money he received from a volunteer. The shopkeeper discovered a fake note in it.
Following this, the beneficiary brought the same to notice of the volunteer. The volunteer then checked with other beneficiaries and reportedly found more fake notes in the money he had distributed.
According to information, each of the beneficiaries received one to three counterfeit currency notes. In all, the volunteer took 38 ₹500 counterfeit notes from them and handed them over to the panchayat secretary.
Officials are investigating how fake currency notes had got into the cash collected from a bank for disbursement of social security pensions.
