New Calicut University synthetic track gets ready to host meets
KOZHIKODE: With the two-member British team done with the marking, the synthetic track at Calicut University Stadium is all set to embrace athletic meets.
The synthetic track which has a eight-line 400-metre track and a straight 10-line track has been laid out according to the measures and standards stipulated by the international and national bodies. The grass-laying process inside the ground is also finished.
The 13th National Youth Athletic Championship, being hosted by the University in May, will be the first event at this synthetic track. The synthetic track work has been carried out with Rs 5.5 crore, allotted by the Youth and Sports Affairs Ministry. The work was started in December, 2013.
The synthetic track was made by a German firm Polytan and the marking was done by TracTech , a British firm. Speaking to DC, Calicut University Physical Education Director Dr V.P Sakeer Hussain said that the University Stadium could now be the permanent venue for varsity athletic championships.
“The rest of the work of the stadium including laying grass outside the track, construction of the changing rooms and hostel facilities will be finished soon. The construction of the international standard swimming pool is also progressing,” he said.
