Karnataka: Ancient pond yields water of the gods!
HASSAN: There are mysteries waiting to be unearthed in the depths of the Earth and villagers of Doddakondagula in Hassan taluk which dates back to the Hoysala era, will vouch for that.
While desilting ancient ponds, Arisina Kere and Bala Bhavi, in a bid to find a water source as summer temperatures soar and the drought takes hold, they found, water gushing out of the dry earth where successive droughts had rendered the land barren.
Doddakondagula, near ISRO's Master Control Facility, is now buzzing with activity after volunteers led by assistant commissioner Nagaraj landed on Monday morning to help remove the silt. The credit should also go to Bhoomi Prathisthana, an NGO, which has pledged to revive these ancient ponds.
Nagaraj told Deccan Chronicle that if silt is removed to a depth of seven feet, more water will become available.
Adding a divine element to the exercise was the discovery of ancient idols, one of Chennakeshava and another of Lord Krishna in the pond bed!
