Thanjavur: Two killed in group clash at temple festival
Thanjavur: Two persons were hacked to death in a clash between people belonging to two different communities after the car festival at a temple at Manjavayal village in Adhirampattinam police limits in Pattukottai taluk in Thanjavur district on Monday night.
Police gave the names of the deceased as Pradeep (30) son of Shanmugha Sundaram and Sivanesan (18), son of Balasubramanian belonging to a particular community. Another five persons including Shanmugha Sundaram, who were injured in the incident were admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.
According to the police, there was previous enmity between the two groups of people belonging to the two communities over use of a cremation ground. ‘Chitra Pournami’ festival started at Balasubramanyaswamy temple at Manjavayal on April 18 and car festival was held on Monday evening.
People belonging to two communities who gathered at the festival clashed after the car festival was over at 11 pm, with knife, wooden logs and sickles. Unfortunately, two died on the spot. Police registered cases against 11 persons belonging to the adversarial community some of whose members hacked the two to death.
Meanwhile, relatives of the deceased refused to take the bodies which were kept at the mortuary at Government hospital at Pattukottai till all those involved in the attack were arrested.
