Government medical college with nursing college sanctioned for Jagtial district

Telugu Nadu alleges fearing that Pratima, Chalmeda medical colleges will face losses, location of college was shifted to Jagtial district

KARIMNAGAR: Establishment of a government medical college along with an affiliated nursing college in Mallial mandal of Jagtial district is fulfilment of a
long-pending demand of people in the region.

Political parties and people’s organisation had been demanding a medical
college in Karimnagar district since two decades. After becoming Chief
Minister, TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao, during his visit to Karimnagar in
August 2014, too promised sanction of a medical college with all facilities
in Karimnagar district headquarters, akin to NIMS in Hyderabad. District
administration had also allocated 42 acres of land in the premises of
University PG College on outskirts of Karimnagar city for the purpose.

However, the government medical college has now been sanctioned in Mallial
of Jagtial district, 65 km away from Karimnagar.

Welfare minister Koppula Eshwar thanked Rao for sanctioning the government
medical college and affiliated nursing college to Jagtial district. He said
this would fulfil the emergency medical needs of people in the area with
availability of specialist doctors, professors and junior doctors.
Choppadandi MLA Sunke Ravi Shankar, along with TRS leaders, bathed the
CM’s flexi in milk for sanctioning the medical college to Jagtial district.
There has, however, been also criticism with regard to location of the
college.

Representatives of Telugu Nadu Students' Union (TNSU) have pointed
out that there are already two private medical colleges – Chalmeda Anand Rao
Medical College and Prathima Medical College in Karimnagar district, owned
by managements belonging to the community of KCR.

The union alleges fearing that these colleges will face losses, location of
the government medical college has been shifted from Karimnagar to Jagtial
district. This is betrayal of people belonging to Karimnagar district, TNSU
sought to point out.

Ambati Johi Reddy, Karimnagar parliamentary segment TD president, said that
people of the district eagerly waited for the announcement of a government
medical college as they were promised by the CM seven years back. The TRS
leaders must be ashamed of not allotting a medical college to Karimnagar.

It is most unfortunate for the students as they did not have any government
medical, engineering and agriculture college in the district. On a number of
occasions, the TRS announced that Karimnagar is the second major city in the
state but is neglecting it in terms of all round development, he alleged.

The ministers, MLAs and public representatives of the district must exert
pressure on the state government for the establishment of medical,
engineering and agriculture colleges keeping in view the future of the
upcoming generations, he demanded.
