Kerala: Social audit at orphanages on
KOZHIKODE: As per the directions of the Supreme Court, the state government has started social auditing in all the orphanages, and the report on the same would be submitted via the State Commission for the Protection of Human Rights by December 31. The auditing is ongoing beginning with those under the Orphanages Control Board. The apex court passed the directions in the first week of May on setting up of a database of children living in orphanages and child care institutions to ensure their safety and welfare.
It also demands to update their data every month. The court had asked the authorities concerned to ensure confidentiality and privacy in maintaining the database. KeSCPCR chairperson Shobha Koshy said since it is a process involving continuity and updating, more details on how much portion has been completed can't be revealed at this point. The court also observed that Centre’s schemes like skill development and vocational training must be taken advantage of keeping in mind the need to rehabilitate such children in need of care and protection. In the state, the majority are yet to be registered by the Juvenile Justice Board.
