Postal department reaches out to students, women

Hyderabad: The postal services department in Telangana is reaching out to students and women, especially those associated with anganwadis, by spreading awareness about the advantages of opening savings accounts with them as they are assured of lucrative interest.

All one needs to open an account in any post office is a copy of the Aadhaar card, said Dr P.V.S. Reddy, postmaster general, Hyderabad region.

“Spending is easy but saving is a tough task. Our staff is inspiring people to open accounts with us and take advantage of higher interest rates, comparatively speaking. We have created 1,600 WhatsApp groups, through which our staff sends messages about our savings accounts. We are concentrating on the interiors where people can save money during the harvest season,” he said.

“The recent Budget announced the Mahela Samman Bachat Patra scheme for girls and women, It allows a two-year Rs 2 lakh deposit to get 7.5 per cent interest per annum. As regards the scheme for senior citizens, the maximum deposit limit has been enhanced to Rs 30 lakh from Rs 15 lakh, Reddy said.

He said that Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had proposed setting up of parcel booking centres, increasing the number of Speed Post hubs, road transport networks, international business centers and Dak Niryat Kendras for boosting postal e-commerce bookings, opening of post offices in leftwing extremist dominated areas in order to strengthen the network and promote rural business.
