HC slams officials for non-functional toilet at govt junior college for girls

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Thursday suo motu took up a news report which stated that the Saroornagar government junior college did not have a toilet for its 700 girl students.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji, on a petition by one Nallapu Manideep, directed the Chief Secretary and principal secretary (education) to file a comprehensive report within six week on the steps taken to improve the conditions prevailing in all government educational institutions.

The bench also issued notices to the commissioner of Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) and the principal of the college, asking them to explain why they had provided a defunct toilet.

Chief Justice Bhuyan, in a sarcastic tone, told the standing counsel for the BIE: ““Wherever there are more government educational institutions, the state should make them environment-friendly, so that more and more girl students have access to basic facilities.”

The news article highlighted that girl students have stopped attending college during their menstrual cycle period as there were no water facilities. Around 300 students boycotted classes protesting against the inaction of the officials in providing basic infrastructure facilities in the college. The case was adjourned to April 25.
