SM Street facelift work kick-started
Kozhikode: As promised by the District administration, the first phase of the SM Street renovation project was launched on Tuesday. The first phase of the work started with the renovation of the internal roads at SM Street that are now in a dilapidated condition. Traffic officials say that once the works are in full swing, vehicular movements in the area would be restricted. The committee chaired by Mayor Thottathil Raveendran has taken up the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the project.
“The design for the renovation has been made in such a way that the structure of existing building would not be changed but necessary measures would be taken for the internal and external repair works of the building. It is the uniformity of the buildings at SM Street that makes this historically prominent place of Kozhikode different from other regions”, he added. The first phase of the work also includes reconstruction of ducts, which will be used to lay underground cables of both the Kerala State Electricity Board and the Bharat Sanchar Nigam limited.
In addition, all the posts of the two departments would be removed as underground cables would replace them and also new kinds of street lights would light up these areas. Thottathil Raveendran said that no objection from the traders had been raised so far as their representative was included in the committee for the project.
