Calicut University to teach German, Japanese

Goethe Zentrum had prepared a proposal and submitted it to the Vice-Chancellor recently.

Kozhikode: The Calicut University will soon start language learning courses in German and Japanese. The varsity has already conducted talks with German cultural centre- ‘Goethe Zentrum’ and a Japanese teaching initiative in this regard and will table the proposals in the syndicate for approval soon. Goethe Zentrum had prepared a proposal and submitted it to the Vice-Chancellor recently. The idea to start a German learning course was put forward by the then German consul-general (Bangalore) Jorn Rohde during a visit to the varsity in March.

“We are already conducting international certification courses in German language and will introduce the same in the varsity at various levels,” said Goethe Zentrum Thiruvananthapuram director Dr Syed Ibrahim. “The university will start the course in its upcoming International Centre for Foreign Languages and provide them with faculty and conduct examinations,” he added. Vice-Chancellor Dr K. Mohammed Bahseer added that a Japanese learning course would also be started at the University Information Centre in Kozhikode.

“Once the syndicate approves the proposals, we will take steps to start it soon,” he added. Meanwhile, Kannur University has not yet taken any steps to start a German leaning course as offered by the German government. The consul-general during his visit to the varsity had offered aid for purchasing books for the university’s Central Library named after German scholar and linguist Hermann Gundert and also help for starting the course.
