Warring traffic police, civic officials halt cycling track project
HYDERABAD: The tussle between traffic cops and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials has brought the cycling track project to a halt. Civic officials claimed that the project was not progressing as planned because local cops were not cooperating on the field.
On the other hand, traffic cops have been annoyed by the markings on the temporary cycling made at several locations throughout the city. The traffic police believe the markings have exacerbated congestion and have served no purpose.
The civic authorities, for their part, believe that the traffic police argument is ridiculous, and that the problem cannot be resolved until top cops from three commissionerates hold a review meeting with the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department.
Under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme, bicycle tracks will be installed on a portion of all road stretches (CRMP). Cycling enthusiasts will have access to 90 kilometres of temporary and permanent bicycle tracks on various stretches, some of which are already open.
However, sources claim that lower-rung traffic cops have thwarted their efforts to move forward with the project. According to a top GHMC official who requested anonymity, traffic has been causing several issues on the temporary cycling tracks. He claimed that they had not coordinated with civic authorities and were frequently in a confrontational mode, resulting in the green city project remaining a pipe dream. According to the official, the issue could not be solved without the engagement of top bureaucrats.
