Cyclone Michaung threatens coastal areas in Tirupati, Nellore and Prakasam districts

Tirupati: The coastal areas between Nellore and Machilipatnam are bracing for the impending landfall of Cyclone Michaung, which is rapidly intensifying in the Bay of Bengal.

The cyclone, projected to hit the coast on December 5 (Tuesday) morning, has wreaked havoc in several areas, unleashing moderate to heavy rainfall in Tirupati, Nellore and Prakasam districts on Sunday.

Coastal villages have been facing the brunt, as the threat of sea surge compounds the situation, prompting urgent calls for residents in these villages to move to higher ground. Fishermen have been warned to stay away from the sea. This led to the suspension of all maritime activities until further notice.

In Nellore and Tirupati cities, the relentless downpour has disrupted daily life, with commuters facing challenges in navigating flooded roads. The officials were put on high alert, anticipating destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal encroachment that could wreak havoc in the affected regions.

Emergency shelters have been set up and relief efforts are under way to ensure the well-being of the affected population.

The Krishnapatnam port in Nellore district raised a 'signal 3' cyclone warning on Sunday, signifying the severity of the approaching storm. Coastal areas such as Podalakuru, Kaluvai, Rapur etc in Nellore district are already feeling the impact, with continuous downpours causing flood-like situations. Reports indicate that high-velocity winds have uprooted electric poles in various locations, leading to power outages.

In Nellore city and its suburbs, drains were overflowing and underbridges at various locations were filled with rainwater, hindering commuter movement. NDRF teams have been deployed in Kavali and Nellore to undertake rescue and relief operations.

Nellore collector Harinarayanan visited vulnerable areas, urging residents to contact the toll-free number 1077 for assistance and directing the relocation of people in low-lying areas to rehabilitation centres.

In Tirupati district, coastal villages in Gudur and Sullurpet constituencies face the threat of flooding. Villages in Chillakuru mandal, including Govindapalli Palem and Kothapatnam, are at risk of seawater inundation. The authorities have issued advance warnings. Arrangements are being made to move villagers to rehabilitation centres, if necessary.

Tirupati city itself is experiencing inundation/floodwater overflow in various areas, including Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, SJ Nagar, Sapthagiri Colony, Sundaraiah Nagar and Chennareddy Colony. Deputy mayor Bhumana Abhinay went to various areas and helped in the clearance of clogged drains to facilitate the free flow of rainwater.

The district administration urged residents in low-lying areas close to the Swarnamukhi river to remain vigilant. Water release from reservoirs like Mallemadugu and Swarnamukhi barrage is being closely monitored.

Meanwhile, Prakasam collector Dinesh Kumar has advised coastal villagers to stay indoors during the storm. Rehabilitation centres have been set up in schools in the coastal region and evacuation measures are in place. Chittoor district has also witnessed heavy rainfall, affecting around 21 villages.
