Florists Have a Rosy Day as Politicos Scramble to Garland Winners
Hyderabad: Florists in the city had a field day on Sunday, making crisp business, as workers of multiple political parties thronged their stores to arm themselves with garlands and bouquets for victory parades and congratulatory meetings.
An eye-catching sale was of a mammoth eight-and-a-half-foot garland, made of roses and lilies, which cost Rs 26,000 and was made on a special order. One-foot-thick mint garlands, popularly known as ‘pudina haar’, were most in demand as they are traditionally used to garland poll victors.
Hafeezuddin, of Fresh Flowers, which prepared the 8.5-foot garland, said the order was placed on Sunday and it took them four to six hours to prepare it.
“This garland costs Rs 26,000. It needs minute work in tying the flowers, and we have to spend around four to six hours on it. We are not sure which party the customer belongs to,” he said.
The biggest flower market in the state, at Jambagh, was a vision in multicolour on Sunday as all shops were scrambling to meet the large number of orders for big flowers, large garlands and grandiose bouquets, placed by supporters and well-wishers of poll winners.
Mir Sameer Ali, who runs a decorative shop that mainly sells tulips at Jambagh, said: “The market is busy with sales from afternoon.”
Syed Ameer Ali, of Dutch Flowers, said, “The larger the garland, more special is the status of the person for whom it is intended. Generally, these garlands are highlighted in processions and then presented to the winner.”
However, not all orders were rosy, as many shopkeepers said that orders placed on Saturday evening were not collected.
A shopkeeper, not wishing to be named, said: “These were ordered on Saturday evening, but the customers did not turn up to take it. This could have been for leaders who lost the polls.”
