Republic Day participant B S Subisha on verge of losing home

Schoolmates form coordination committee to chip in funds.

KOLLAM: B.S. Subisha, sixth semester BA English student of SN college here, brought pride to Kerala by being the lone woman participant who represented the state in the NCC ship-modelling category at the Republic Day parade held in Delhi last month. However, she and her family of Pulikulathu house, Koonayil, Paravoor, are in dire straits. Their house is under threat of recovery proceedings by the State Bank of Travancore, South Paravoor branch, from where their father had availed of a loan of Rs 8.90 lakh in October 2010 by mortgaging it.

Subisha’s father K. Suresh, who was working abroad, later abandoned the family and filed a divorce petition before the family court. The bank had earlier granted six months’ time till November 30 to settle the amount based on a representation submitted to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. But the loan amount has now exceeded Rs 10 lakh and the bank has initiated recovery proceedings owing to the defaults in repayment classifying it as non- performing asset. Subisha’s mother Baby had taken up tailoring work to support her children, including her younger son B.S. Subin, after their father abandoned them.

Subin, a Plus-Two student in the Paravoor HSS, is a state champion in boxing. Baby is now critically ill and the family is in poverty. K.U. Akhil, classmate of Subisha, told DC, “when we visited her house, they did not even have anything to eat. They had earlier tried to sell the land to settle the amount. However, the currency crisis hindered the move. If an amount of Rs 3 lakh is paid within a week, the recovery process could be avoided, but the family will still not be able to pay the EMI of Rs 10,000, ” he said. Her college mates have formed a coordination committee to help her through crowd-funding. They plan to collect funds from the public and bring the issue before the prime minister and the chief minister to save the family.
