Rythu Sangham seeks two new barrages on Krishna River

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham has passed a unanimous resolution seeking construction of two new barrages across River Krishna at Chodavaram in Penamaluru mandal and at Bandikolla Lanka in Mopidevi mandal to store 3 TMC of water in each barrage.

AP Rythu Sangham state general secretary K.V.V. Prasad said these two barrages had been proposed by the previous government. The present government too completed the survey and has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on constructing the barrages at a cost of Rs 2,565 crore.

Prasad said the general body meeting of the Sangham met here and unanimously demanded that the government urgently complete these two barrages and supply water for kharif and rabi crops.

The sangham general secretary said various governments have formed 65 commissions for welfare of farmers and farming community. But sadly, none of those reports had been implemented so far. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too ignored his election promise of implementing the Swaminathan Committee recommendations.

All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) national president Ravula Venkaiah said farmers will unitedly fight against the BJP-led central government, opposing its anti-farmer policies. He underlined that farmers are committing suicides for not getting back even their investment in farming operations.

Andhra Pradesh Koulu Rythu Sangham general secretary P. Jamalaiah, AP Rythu Sangham district president Velagapudi Azad, leaders Surendranath Banerjee, D. Srinivasa Rao, M. Uma Maheswara Rao, V. Ratnagiri Rao and CPI district in-charge secretary T. Tataiah were among those present.
