Kannur panchayat turns waste heap into a garden
KANNUR: There is a way to prevent the people from piling waste in public places. The Kannur district panchayat has come out with a bright idea-- turn the place into a garden so that one would give a second thought before dumping the waste there. The civic body has converted a waste heap on the premises of its commercial complex in the city into a garden by removing the wastes, fixing grass blocks and saplings.
And all that in 24 hours! The work was carried out by Nirmithi Kendra in association with the district panchayat. District panchayat vice-president P.P. Divya said that the idea of beautification came after the civic body’s repeated request to the public not to dump waste in the premises fell on deaf ears.
“Now people will be reluctant to put waste here and we will provide sufficient waste bins for them to use in public places,” she said. The district panchayat is planning to implement it in similar places in the city.
“There are many such places where people dump waste. Similar initiatives will be taken in such spots and we feel that it should be extended to grama panchayats too for better results,” she added. The photos of the garden before and after the transformation posted by Ms Divya on her Facebook page also became a hit fetching more than 3,000 likes and 400 shares within one hour after being uploaded.
