Monsoon delayed further, temperature rises in AP
VISHAKHAPATNAM: The delay in onset of the Southwest Monsoon will mean a continued struggle for people from the high heat in many parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Normally, monsoon sets in over the Kerala coast on June 1 and reaches AP a week later during its northward course. This year, the arrival in Kerala was forecast for June 4 while it would be June 10 for Andhra Pradesh. However, latest reports indicate that the onset over Kerala will be further delayed by four to seven days.
“There is inconsistency in the Bay of Bengal and a low pressure is forming in the Arabian Sea. Easterly winds are also obstructing the path of the monsoons,’’ senior scientist of IMD Amaravati, S Karunakar explained.
The IMD report said temperature would rise by two to four degrees in some parts of AP in the next two days. Bapatla registered the highest temperature of 43.6 degree Celsius on Sunday, Amaravati 43.1ºC, Gannavaram, Ongole and Kavali 40 ºC each. Mercury dropped by 6.9ºC in Nandyal, and was at 33.3ºC in Nandigama.
The report also forecast thunderstorms for north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next two days.
