Polavaram project's spillway retaining wall tilts
KAKINADA: The Polavaram Project is back in the news for a “wrong” reason. A retaining wall to the spillway tilted towards the project site, but the project officials maintained a veil of secrecy over this.
According to sources, the officials alerted the experts associated with the project. After the experts give a confirmation of the tilting of the retaining wall, the officials would announce it, a source said.
Meanwhile, water resources minister Ambati Rambabu visited the project site on Saturday. The media was kept away by the officials. The minister and a set of officials took a close look at the retaining wall.
The local officials noticed the damage to the retaining wall on Saturday morning and informed the government, especially the water resources department.
Lack of quality in the construction is suspected to be the reason for the tilting. Notably, the Polavaram project had suffered damage to its diaphragm wall and this had hurt the reputation of the state government.
