HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to construct a six-lane bridge opposite Marriott Hotel near Tank Bund with an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore.
The corporation also decided to construct 11 floodgates by extending one-and-half metre of the existing sluice gates of Hussainsagar with an estimated cost of Rs 41 crore. The 114-metre bridge, which will be an extension on the stretch at the Tank Bundh arch that connects Secunderabad with Hyderabad, will have no entry or exit for vehicles.
According to the Strategic Road Development Plan (SNDP) officials, floodgates would be built underneath the proposed bridge to regulate excess water from Hussainsagar to avoid flooding in low-lying areas. Hussainsagar already has 11 vents and a diversion nala where excess water is drained out.
The officials said the six-lane extension would cater to the need of 11 vents which would be soon converted into floodgates. When the water reaches full tank level (FTL) of 513.41 metres and maximum water level (MWL) of 514.75 metres, it will be let out through the floodgates, said the officials.
An SNDP official said after constructing the bridge and converting vents into floodgates, excess water in Hussainsagar would be under complete control of authorities and it could save low-lying areas from inundation.
Meanwhile, under the short-term plan for 2021-22, the municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) department issued administrative sanctions for Rs 858 crore worth of works. These works include construction of bridges, widening and remodelling of nalas, development of surplus weirs, and lakes and water bodies under the SNDP scheme. Stormwater drainage system in Hyderabad Urban Agglomeration (HUA) will also be improved under these works.
