GHMC Takes up Rejuvenation of 40 Lakes

Hyderabad: Around 40 lakes in the city are getting a facelift with the GHMC initiating steps for their protection and development at a budget of Rs 72.52 crore.

Fencing, diverting sewage inflow into the water bodies and desilting are the major works that are being executed at these water bodies.

While fencing is being done by chain link mesh, they are building box drains to divert the sewage discharge into the lakes.

“We have also taken up construction of weir-cum-causeway/bridge and removing water hyacinth, debris and waste material from the lakes apart from ensuring that the low-lying areas around the lake are not inundated,” said a GHMC official.

Sandappa kunta, Medla kunta and Meedi kunta in Serilingampally zone are some lakes where works are underway. Flood diversion through pipe lines, construction of weir-cum-bridge and restoration of surplus courses have been taken up at these lakes.

Mannevari kunta in Machabolaram and Panthul cheruvu in Suraram will also be rejuvenated. Hyderabad Lakes and Water Bodies Management Circle (HL&WBMC), a wing of the GHMC, is executing these works. Some companies are collaborating with the rejuvenation project as part of their CSR activities.

Simultaneously, beautification works, developing recreational facilities for all age groups, walking tracks, landscaping, illumination, children’s play area, open gyms, toilets, amphitheatre and gazebos among other facilities are all integral to the project.

“We have urged resident welfare associations to join hands in the lake rejuvenation process," said a GHMC official.
